Koufonisia

Koufonisia include two main islands, the Pano (Upper) Koufonisi and the Kato (Lower) Koufonisi. They are located on the southeast side of Naxos and on the west side of Amorgos and belong to the complex ofSmall East Cyclades.They are separated by a channel of 200m width. Their name is due to thehollow(kouphiain Greek) rocks at many points of their coasts.

When you arrive at the port, you can see a white windmill of see front and white houses of Chora. Pano Koufonisi is the capital of the island. The island has a traditional insular architecture with beautiful villages of white houses, many findings from the Hellenistic and Roman times. One of the most significant finds in the history of Cyclades is a vessel engraved with a star on it, kept today at the Museum of Naxos, narrow streets and a great view to the endless blue of Aegean sea.

The island of Koufonisia has to present a rich cultural history and folklore, with many monuments and settlements testify to the remarkable growth both in antiquity and in modern course. At the same time, remarkable customs have their roots deep in time and maintain the tradition of the place.

The main attractions of the island is the church of Panagia the protector of the island, the folk Museum, windmills, Karnayo (Dockyard), Pisina, To mati tou diavolou cave, Tripiti or Gala and the caves at Xylobatis Cove.

The natural beauty of Koufonisia island is an attraction for hikers. Traditional mule paths, some dating from Classical times, criss-cross the island and open up unexpected views of the magnificent landscape. They lead to lonely beaches, remote mountain scenery, secret valleys and many unspoiled hamlets.
